Experience
Darren Mark Popkin has been the Second in Command of the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office for over eleven years. As Chief Deputy Sheriff, Darren is the operational commander of a staff of 148 law enforcement officers and 29 civilian employees who provide judicial and law enforcement services throughout the county.
During his 25 years as a deputy sheriff, Darren rose through the ranks, serving in the transportation, civil and criminal divisions. Darren is currently involved in extensive programs designed to reduce the incidents of domestic violence in the County. He was part of the strategic planning committee responsible for designing and implementing the interagency Montgomery County Family Justice Center which opened in May, 2009 and has since served over 1,600 clients. Darren continues his executive management role over the FJC.
Chief Popkin received his B.A. in Law Enforcement from the University of Maryland, College Park, and graduated from the former Robert E. Peary High School. Darren's off-duty passion is coaching boys' and girls' softball and basketball teams in local leagues and national tournaments. He is an active basketball player in the Montgomery County adult athletic league.
A family man and life-long county resident, Darren lives in Olney with his wife Suzanne and their three children, Josh in public school, Shayna starting her first year of college and Robin in her third year of college.
